Australian Bed Sizes Explained: Will These Sheets Fit Your Mattress?

Australian bed sizes run from King Single up to Super King, and the gaps between them are bigger than most people expect — a Queen and a King differ by 30cm in width alone. Here's what each size actually measures, and how to check your sheets will fit before you buy.

The six Australian bed sizes, in centimetres

Bed and sheet sizing in Australia follows a fairly standard set of measurements, though it pays to check your own mattress rather than assume. As a guide:

  • Single: 92 x 188 cm
  • King Single: 107 x 203 cm
  • Double: 138 x 188 cm
  • Queen: 153 x 203 cm
  • King: 183 x 203 cm
  • Super King: 203 x 203 cm

Notice that King Single and Double are both 188cm long but very different in width, and that Queen, King and Super King all share the same 203cm length. Width is where the real differences sit, so it's the number worth double-checking.

Why "Queen" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere

If you've bought bedding overseas, or seen sizing on an international site, it's worth knowing that "Queen" and "King" aren't universal measurements. A US Queen is close to an Australian Queen, but a US King is wider and shorter than an Australian King. UK sizing is different again. None of this matters if you're buying from an Australian retailer for an Australian mattress, but it's the reason a size label alone isn't enough to go on if you're ever comparing across regions. Always match to the centimetre measurements, not just the name.

How to actually measure your mattress

The label on your mattress is a reasonable starting point, but mattresses shift, get replaced, or come from smaller manufacturers whose sizing runs slightly differently. Measuring takes two minutes and removes the guesswork:

  • Measure the width and length of the mattress itself, not the bed frame, in centimetres.
  • Measure the height of the mattress from the base to the top, including any topper you sleep on permanently. This is the number that matters for fitted sheets.
  • Round up rather than down if you're between two measurements — a slightly generous fitted sheet sits better than one that's fighting to stay on.

If you'd rather not do the maths yourself, our size guide lays out the full measurements for every size we make, side by side.

What "deep pocket" actually solves

Mattress height is where most sheet fit problems come from, not width or length. A fitted sheet cut for a 25cm mattress will strain and pop off the corners of a 35cm one, no matter how correct the width is. Whom's fitted sheets are cut with 40cm deep pockets as standard, which comfortably covers most mattresses including a topper, and Super King fitted sheets step up to 50cm pockets to match the larger bed. If you sleep on a particularly tall mattress, or stack a wool topper on top of memory foam, measure the full stacked height before you order rather than assuming standard will do.

Flat sheets and duvet covers work differently

Fitted sheets need to match your mattress precisely, but flat sheets and duvet covers are more forgiving since they're not wrapping around corners. A duvet cover is sized to the doona it holds rather than the mattress, so a Queen duvet cover fits a Queen doona regardless of what depth your mattress is. The one thing worth checking is that your doona size matches your bed size in the first place — a Double doona on a Queen bed will leave both sides short, which shows up on the first cold night rather than at checkout.

If you're still not sure

Bed sizing trips people up more often than it should, mostly because the names suggest more precision than they deliver. If you've measured and you're still torn between two sizes, our FAQ page covers the most common sizing questions, and our team can help directly if your mattress is an unusual shape or an older custom size. Because we know sizing mistakes happen even with careful measuring, unused and unwashed sheets can be returned within 30 days — see our returns page for the details.

Once you know your measurements, the rest is straightforward. Our bamboo bedding range is made in every Australian size from Single to Super King, in organic bamboo lyocell, ready when you are.
